Ever wonder how a centuries-old game can supercharge modern leadership? About ten years ago, I made it my mission to find out. I stepped beyond just training elite chess players and sports professionals, focusing instead on guiding leaders, decision-makers, and big thinkers in the corporate world. Why? Because I’m convinced that Hungary’s businesses can gain tangible benefits from the strategic mindset chess brings. And I’m ready to prove it.
But let’s face it, Hungary isn’t exactly famous for embracing new ideas. Here’s the twist: chess has been here since the 1500s, yet we’ve never truly integrated it into our everyday thinking — or our corporate culture. We talk about innovation, but we tend to only accept what fits our comfort zone.
Convincing people to give chess-strategy a chance in business can be tough. Most of the time, I only get the opportunity once we meet face-to-face and I can demonstrate what “chess strategy” really means for leadership and problem-solving. Ironically, the toughest part isn’t proving its effectiveness — it’s getting a foot in the door. Fortunately, companies like OTP Hungary have given me the opportunity to showcase how chess strategies can elevate business skills. Through the Smart Watch program (Hungarian: Okosóra program), I introduced employees to the striking parallels between chess and the corporate world, highlighting how chess training and strategy can strengthen their professional competencies.
Meanwhile, on the international front, organizations such as Google in Silicon Valley have also welcomed my workshops, proving there’s a global appetite for fresh perspectives — even if they initially seem unconventional.
Chess is right here in front of us — an age-old practice that refines the way we plan, communicate, and innovate. All we need is the willingness to let this timeless tradition drive modern progress. After all, a bit of strategic thinking can unlock limitless possibilities in business. ♟️
